The Huron Hospice is closer than ever to reaching the fundraising goal of $1.6 million, to add beds to its residence and increase quality palliative care in the area, after a $500,000 gift from David and Susan Bender.
The couple said that the reason for their donation stemmed from the personal experiences of a friend and family member."Sometimes people just need tea and a cookie, while others need someone to talk to and share with. Hospice affords dignity and the personal care and kindness at the end of life, so a person can die with dignity," David and Susan commented.
"We are honoured to accept this gift from David and Susan," Huron Hospice Chair of the Board, Jay McFarlan said. "In recognition of this gift, the Board of Directors has approved the renaming of the Huron Hospice Residence. As of today, the residence will be called Huron Hospice Bender House."
"Today is an important milestone since the Ontario Government has previously committed to match all dollars we raise to a maximum of $800,000," Huron Hospice Executive Director, Willy Van Klooster added.
The combined contributions from the Benders, other donors, and the province is now $1.5 million, which is just $100,000 short of the funds needed to start the next phase of the project.
The Huron Hospice Project will increase care provided at, the newly named, Bender House from 65 to 100 families per year.
Huron Hospice has provided care, emotional support and practical assistance to individuals and families who are facing a life-limiting illness in the Huron area for over 25 years.
