UPDATE: One dead after plane crash near Stratford

One person is dead after a small plane crashed near Stratford on Tuesday.

Emergency crews were called to an area near the Stratford Airport on Tuesday morning just after 9 a.m. A release from Perth County OPP states that a small, double-engine plane crashed in an open field just northeast of the Stratford Municipal Airport. Police have confirmed that one person was killed as a result of the crash. The name of the deceased is being withheld until police can inform the family.

Transport Canada has been called in to assist in the investigation.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area of Perth Line 43 between Roads 109 and 110 for several hours during the investigation. The OPP confirmed the area was reopened just before 9 p.m.

Police say more details will be provided when they are available. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is encouraged to contact Perth County OPP or Crime Stoppers.
