UPDATE: Police on-scene at fatal crash near Meaford

A fatal crash has closed a highway near Meaford.

Grey-Bruce OPP confirmed via Twitter that they responded to a reported collision on Highway 26 west of Meaford at 2:23 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27.

Following an investigation, police determined a compact vehicle was travelling east on Highway 26 when it collided head-on with a pickup truck heading west.

As a result, the driver of the compact vehicle was pronounced dead on scene. Two other passengers in that vehicle were airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The name of the deceased is not being released pending notification of next-of-kin.

As of 5:30 p.m., police remain on-scene alongside emergency responders, and Highway 26 is closed between Grey Road 112 and 7th Line. Police have not said when the road will be reopened.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.
