Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs announced a list of sanctions Monday in response to reports of gross human rights violations committed in Iran.
Minister Melanie Joly said Canada supports country-wide protests in Iran about the death of Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old died in the custody of Iran's morality police, allegedly for not wearing her hijab properly.
"People across Iran are currently in the streets protesting the tragic killing of Mahsa Amini. Canada salutes them and we want to say to everybody that we stand with them in saying the women's rights are human rights," said Joly.
Joly said the targets of the sanctions include the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Joly pointed to Iran's continued grave and ongoing breaches of international law.
"Iran has also shown a blatant disregard for human life with flight PS752. Canada will sanction the so-called morality police and its leadership. And Canada will hold Iran accountable for its crime," she added.
She said among the individuals and entities facing sanctions are senior Iranian officials and prominent entities that directly implement repressive measures, voilate human life, and spread the Iranian regime's propaganda and misinformation.
