Iconic Monkton hotel destroyed by fire

The former Red Maple Hotel in Monkton was destroyed by fire Monday.

Perth County OPP closed Winstanley Street in Monkton while fire crews battled the blaze. It broke out around 11 a.m.

Photos on social media show the building smoldering and later knocked down with an excavator. The building had most recently housed Sisters Antiques but was under new ownership.

The road was closed much of the night and reopened at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.
