Unemployment rises slightly in Midwestern Ontario

The unemployment rate rose slightly in November in Midwestern Ontario.

The Four County Labour Market Planning Board says unemployment in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region increased by 0.4 percentage points to 2.7%.

According to the board, this is the lowest unemployment rate in Ontario for the fourth consecutive month.

The provincial unemployment rate decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 5.1%.

Overall, net employment in the region decreased by 4,400, with 6,000 full-time losses and 1,600 part-time gains.

The construction sector once again experienced the biggest loss this month (-2,500). Manufacturing and utilities also experienced losses (-700) and (-500) respectively. Agriculture experienced a gain (+800).

Educational services experienced the largest gain (+2,600), but it was not enough to offset the losses in healthcare and social assistance (-2,000) and wholesale and retail trade (-1,600).
