Wingham hospital emergency room closing again Sunday

The emergency department at the Wingham and District Hospital will be closed on Sunday from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. "as a result of ongoing healthcare staff shortages," according to a notice from the Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance.

On Friday, the alliance originally announced an overnight closure from 9 p.m. on Saturday night to 7 p.m. on Sunday morning. Now the shut-down has been extended to Sunday evening.

The Wingham hospital's emergency room has needed to cease operations several times this year, with this being the second days-long closure in less than a month.

Patients who require urgent care are asked to call 911. Ambulances will be re-routed to hospitals in the surrounding area, such as Listowel, Clinton, and Goderich.

For non-emergencies, Health Connect Ontario is available for questions 24/7 by calling 811.
