Decision to cancel school buses remains tricky on snowy mornings

Huron Perth Student Transportation Services says it's not an exact science when it comes to bus cancellations on snowy mornings, but decisions are made with the safety of students being top of mind.

Janice White is the General Manager of Huron Perth STS and says bus drivers are on the road as early as 4:00 a.m. when the weather forecast includes conditions that may require bus cancellations.

"They're driving the roads, in a bus or own vehicle, and seeing what live road conditions are." says White. "Many have contacts within municipal roadworks that have been built up over the years. There are five different school bus companies in the area, so it's not just one person making that decision."

Factors that influence the decision to cancel buses on mornings include current and forecasted weather conditions, current road conditions, as well as how soon snow will be cleared from roads, but the safety of students, including students waiting at bus stops in poor visibility conditions, is the most important consideration.
