UPDATE: Elderly cyclist killed in Mapleton Township collision

An 81-year-old Hamilton resident has died after a crash in Mapleton Township on Sunday afternoon.

Around 3 p.m., Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said they responded to a collision involving a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a cyclist. The incident happened along County Road 12 between County Road 8 and Twelfth Line.

Also responding to the scene were the Guelph Wellington Paramedic Service and the Drayton Fire Department, according to police.

The cyclist was reportedly taken to hospital and later pronounced deceased. Police say the driver of the SUV was not hurt.

Following the collision, OPP shut down a stretch of County Road 12 and asked drivers to avoid the area. They expect the closure to last for several hours.

The OPP West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team are assisting in the investigation.
