UPDATE: Wingham emergency department closing overnight Friday

The Wingham and District Hospital will temporarily close its emergency department overnight Friday due to staffing shortages.

The ED will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 5 and reopen Saturday morning at 7 a.m. Originally the ED was scheduled to close at 9 p.m. on Friday, but staffing challenges have caused the closure to be extended for four additional hours.

Area patients are still asked to call 911 if they have an emergency and they will be rerouted to the nearest hospital.

Nearby hospitals include: Listowel, Clinton, Goderich, Palmerston, Seaforth, Kincardine and Walkerton.

The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance says it regrets that it has to take the temporary measure and appreciates the community’s patience and understanding.
