A local couple has left a large bequest to the Wingham and District Hospital Foundation.
The foundation is welcoming a $273,000 gift from the Estate of Ian and Peggy Moreland.
Peggy passed away in 2011, followed by Ian in 2012. The foundation said their gift will help put up to date medical technology in the hands of skilled local caregivers and improve the hospital facility.
Ian and Peggy relocated from Scotland to Toronto in the 1950s while Ian worked as an engineer on Canada’s famed military jet, the Avro Arrow. When the government abandoned the project, the Morelands ended up in Wingham when Ian was hired to work at the Western Foundry (Wescast). The couple jumped into community life, especially enjoying golf and curling. Ian also served as Wingham’s mayor from 1988 to 1994. One of his legacies was the walking trail, which included converting the rail bridge into a walking bridge. He also helped establish the airport.
"Estate gifts, like that made by the Morelands, are vitally important to safeguarding high quality local healthcare for future generations," said a statement from the foundation. "The memory of Ian and Peggy Moreland will live on in their treasured hometown through their thoughtful generosity."
