Wingham emergency department closing overnight all weekend

For a sixth straight weekend, the Wingham and District Hospital's emergency department will be temporarily closing due to staffing shortages.

The ER will be closing overnight for three nights, beginning on Friday, June 9. Doors will close at 5 p.m. each evening and reopen at 7 a.m. the following morning. The overnight closures will run from Friday night through to Monday morning, at which point the hospital will resume its 24/7 schedule.

The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance said in a news release the closure is "a last resort and we deeply regret taking this action."

Ambulance bypass will commence each night to take patients to the nearest available ER. The closest hospitals include: Listowel, Clinton, Goderich, Palmerston, and Seaforth.
