Unemployment rate slightly dips in May

The unemployment rate for the Stratford to Bruce Peninsula Economic Region slightly dipped in May.

According to the Four County Labour Market Planning Board, May saw a slight decrease of just 0.1 percentage points to land back at 5.9 percent in the region. The provincial unemployment rate increased by 0.3 percentage points to 5.4 percent, both unadjusted for seasonality.

"The region’s labour force size increased from 166,000 people in April to 167,000 people in May 2023. The size of the population not participating in the labour force also decreased by 700, bringing the participation rate up by 0.3 percent to 61.5 percent. Meanwhile, overall net employment in the region increased by 1,100, with 1,100 full-time and 100 part-time gains respectively," according to the release from the Four County Labour Market Planning Board.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
