Fire forces evacuation of Owen Sound building

Unattended cooking is getting the blame for a fire that forced the evacuation of a home in Owen Sound.

Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services received a call reporting a fire in the kitchen of a duplex on 2nd Avenue West.

First and second alarm personnel arrived on the scene just after 9 a.m. Wednesday, and were able to limit the fire to the kitchen of the two-story unit.

All apartments were evacuated while firefighters put out the blaze. Smoke alarms were heard sounding throughout the building.

The fire department reminds people to never leave cooking unattended on the stove, and to never move a burning pot. The best plan to douse the flames is to cover the pot with a lid. In the event of a fire, close all doors and alert occupants that a fire is occurring.

Smoke alarms are required to be located on every level of a home, and everyone should practice their home escape plan.
