Owen Sound couple charged with negligence in death of young child

Owen Sound police have arrested a man and a woman after a toddler died in hospital over the weekend.

Around 10 a.m. Sunday, emergency crews responded to a west-end residence after a 911 call came in, police said.

When officers arrived, a child under the age of two was in medical distress. Police say life-saving efforts were performed on the scene before the child was taken to Grey Bruce Regional Health Services, where they were pronounced deceased.

A post-mortem examination has since been completed at London Health Sciences Centre. A warrant was used to search the home where the incident occurred.

Following an investigation by members of the Owen Sound Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Branch, two people have been arrested.

A 48-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, both of Owen Sound, are charged with criminal negligence causing death.

“As this has been a tragic incident for all persons involved and continues to be an extremely difficult time for family members, there will be no further details provided by police,” read a statement from police.

Both of the accused were held for a bail hearing on Monday.
