South Bruce Peninsula declares mayor's seat vacant

Councillors for the Town of South Bruce Peninsula officially declared the mayor's seat vacant at Tuesday's meeting, meaning they'll have 60 days to fill the role.

Former Mayor Garry Michi resigned on August 29 after audio emerged of him making disparaging remarks about the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation community.

Council will now have the choice of either filling the mayor's seat by appointment or holding a by-election.

Chief Administrative Officer Bill Jones said a full report detailing their options will be presented to council soon.

The next regular council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 19.

In the absence of a mayor, Deputy Mayor Jay Kirkland assumes all duties.
