Wingham teen plays key role in Pan American Championships bronze medal

It came down to a pitcher's duel and extra innings.

Canada's U18 Men’s National Team came out on top in the bronze medal game at the 2023 WBSC Americas Pan American Championship on Saturday.

Canada was looking for redemption against Argentina after falling to them 7-5 in an earlier game.

The game was scoreless through seven innings, with pitchers looking strong on both sides.

Canada took the lead in the top of the eighth following a sacrifice hit by Wingham native, Riley Good, that moved a runner into scoring position. Another sacrifice fly made it 1-0 for Canada.

The final out, in the bottom of the eighth, came from a double play initiated by Good.

Pitcher Cohen Christner, of New Hamburg, Ontario, gave up only two hits, with no runs, and eight strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Five athletes on the team hail from Midwestern Ontario. Joining Good are Daniel Scott from Stratford, Nolan Bultena of Arthur, Alex McGillivray of Durham, and Joseph Weiler of Hepworth.

Team Canada now qualifies for the 2023 WBSC U18 Men’s Softball World Cup being held November 11-19, in Hermosillo, Mexico.
