Man charged in Wingham robbery

Huron County OPP charged a 34-year-old of no fixed address in relation to a robbery that took place in Wingham earlier this month.

Police say on September 5 around 10 a.m. they were contacted by the owner of a retail business on Josephine Street. They reported that a male suspect had just shoplifted items from the store and brandished a boxcutter-style knife demanding the caller's wristwatch.

The suspect left on foot and was located shortly after by OPP officers at a nearby restaurant. Police say the accused was still in possession of the knife and was arrested.

The man faces charges including robbery with a weapon and theft under $5,000.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing where he was remanded into custody awaiting a further court appearance in Goderich.
