Huron OPP officers cleared by SIU

The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) cleared three Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers in the death of a Goderich man.

The SIU became involved as the officers were present when the shooting death occurred.

According to the SIU, the police were called to a motel on June 22, 2023, for a welfare check on a 48-year-old man.

The officers reportedly knocked on the door of his room and moments later heard a single gunshot. The investigation showed that the OPP officers then breached the door and attempted to provide medical assistance until the paramedics arrived.

"While the officers' presence and knock on the door may have precipitated his final act, it is apparent that none of the subject officials transgressed the limits of care prescribed by the criminal law in their brief engagement with him," the SIU concluded.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
