Jay Kirkland, the Mayor of the Town of South Bruce Peninsula is the latest to offer his condolences following the discovery of human remains at a compost facility near Southampton.
The remains have been determined to be ancestors of the Saugeen Ojibway First Nations people, which were removed from a property in the Sauble Beach area before their recent discovery.
"The lands in this area have a deep history and are spiritually significant to our indigenous friends. My fellow members of Council and I are saddened this has happened. Our thoughts are with the people of Saugeen Ojibway First Nation during this difficult time," Kirkland said in a statement.
Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau released his own statement Friday night.
"Because the remains were not originally located in Saugeen Shores, we can only imagine the pain this discovery has caused the people of Saugeen Ojibway Nation," he said.
The Saugeen Shores Police Service and the Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are working on a joint investigation regarding the discovery.
As of 5 p.m. Saturday, the Saugeen Ojibway Nation had recovered the remains, and the Concession 14 compost site reopened.
