SSPS implements CAMSAFE program

The Saugeen Shores Police Service (SSPS) has implemented the CAMSAFE program, allowing residents, businesses, and other community members to register their security cameras.

The purpose of the program is to make police aware of where potential crimes could have been captured, helping with the investigation.

"It's a collective of cameras that people in the people in the community submit that their footage is available to police if needed, if there's a crime or serious incident in the area that we need to review," said Sgt. Andy Evans, media relations officer with the SSPS. "That being said, the owner of the camera owns that video. The police do not have access to that video unless it's volunteered by the owner."

Evans said the program was enacted due to the evolution of technology.

"There's doorbell cameras, there's cameras everywhere," he said. "For instance, if we have a serious incident on the main street of Port Elgin or Southampton, where a vehicle was stolen, then we think who is in this database and might have a camera that captures the incident?"

It also can be very helpful when it comes to missing persons. You can register your camera and learn more about the program here.
