Red Cross and SSPS reminding drivers to be prepared

The Red Cross Canada and Saugeen Shores Police Service (SSPS) are reminding drivers to be prepared and pack an emergency winter kit in your car.

These items should include things like a shovel, blanket, booster cables, water and non-perishable snacks, warm winter clothes, a first aid kit, an external battery for cell phones, and more.

"We have a lot of rural routes and roads," said Sgt. Andy Evans, media relations officer with SSPS. "I can give an example, the other day as I was on my way to court in Walkerton, I found somebody in the ditch. They didn't have a cell phone on them and they didn't have a winter kit. If they're stranded out there with no means to look after themselves or contact assistance, then they're in a vulnerable position."

In Midwestern Ontario, snow accumulates fast and Evans said, especially at night, it isn't safe to get out and wander.

"If your vehicle goes in the ditch, the way the wind is in our community, your vehicle is going to be obscured by the snow and concealed very quickly," he said. "Having these means of survival and looking after yourself until assistance comes is absolutely vital."
