Police investigating after ‘Molotov cocktail’ thrown at Hanover business

The Hanover Police Service is actively investigating an arson incident that occurred on Friday, December 15, 2023, at the Travellers Inn Motel at 244 7th Avenue in Hanover.

Emergency services, including the Hanover Police and Fire departments, responded to the incident, which took place at 6:35 p.m. Occupants of the motel successfully extinguished the fire before emergency crews arrived, resulting in only minor damage to both the interior and exterior of the building. No injuries have been reported.

According to the investigation, a male suspect threw a "molotov cocktail" at the rear entrance on the west side of the building, breaking the glass in the door and igniting a fire.

The suspect ran towards 7th Avenue, along the south side of the motel. It is believed that several shoppers from the nearby Food Basics grocery store may have witnessed the suspect running away.

The Fire Marshal's office has been contacted, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the arson or those who witnessed the suspect fleeing the scene to contact the Hanover Police Service at 519-364-2411 or CrimeStoppers of Grey Bruce at 1-800-222-8477.
