Overdose leads to drug trafficking charges

Hanover police have charged a 31-year-old man with trafficking fentanyl, possession of fentanyl, and breaching probation.

The charges came after reports of a disturbance on Wednesday afternoon.

Police were called at about 3:20 p.m. to a 7th Avenue address for reports of a disturbance involving several people.

When officers arrived at the scene, it was determined that a woman was given fentanyl by the suspect which led to an overdose. After helping her recover, the woman's friends decided to confront the suspect which led to a physical altercation, police said.

"Although the female who overdosed on the fentanyl willingly and knowingly smoked the illicit drug, anyone who uses a street drug can never be certain about what they are exactly consuming and the harm it can cause," police warned.

The man was arrested and later released by police with conditions and a future court date.
