If you're looking to volunteer this summer and want to do so at the beach, the Municipality of Kincardine is looking for you.
The town is launching a Beach Blazers program for the first time, starting in late June.
The volunteer program was a recommendation from the recent Pier Safety Ad-hoc Committee's report to council.
Like the Trail Blazers program that was launched last fall, these volunteers will walk the Station Beach waterfront during peak times, acting as ambassadors for the Municipality. They are not lifeguards and will not enter the water to perform rescues.
Anne-Marie Thomson, Manager of Recreation explains how it works.
"We're going to assemble a group of volunteers called Beach Blazers who are going to help spread and inform folks about water safety and education," she said. "The goal is to make people more aware of how the weather and wind direction impacts the currents that you might experience along the shores of Lake Huron, and how to look for things and educate yourself to be safer when you're swimming at the beach."
Thomson says no expertise is needed.
"We're actually open to folks who have no knowledge of beaches at all and are just passionate about getting onboard and coming and joining us to spread that information," she said,
Thomson says the only requirement is that volunteers must be 18 or over and willing to spare a few hours a week during peak beach times.
There will be an information session mid-June for those interested. Thomson says the date of that info session will be finalized later.
The program will run from late June to Labour Day weekend.
