Council receives report on local police force

Hanover Council received the 2023 Hanover Police Service Annual Report at their most recent meeting.

The budgeted expenses for the local police force show that the actual expenses came in under budget at just over $3.25 million, with the budget set at just over $3.37 million.

According to the report from Hanover Police Chief Chris Knoll, calls for service increased 6 percent over 2022 with a total of 5,537 calls for service in 2023.  That marked a record high for the Hanover Police Service.

The Overall Crime Severity Index decreased by 3.3 percent from 2022, but violent crimes were up 15.2 percent. Non-violent crimes decreased by 8.8 percent.

Overall criminal charges in Hanover increased slightly over 2022 numbers with a total of 739 criminal charges processed in 2023.

The number of prisoners held in HPS lock up facilities increased over 2022 with a total of 312 prisoners held in 2023.
