A student created cookbook is helping showcase the multicultural heritage of Huron County.
Created by a partnership between the Avon Maitland District School Board's Multilingual Language Learning team and the County of Huron Cultural Services, the project aimed to have students learn, create, and share their culinary traditions. It was funded with support from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
The book involved students from Food Services classes at FE Madill Secondary School, Central Huron Secondary School, Goderich District Collegiate Institute, and South Huron District High School.
They were connected with a couple local artists, who helped them depict their recipes throughout the book.
Mark Nonkes, Local Immigration Partnership Manager, says it offers an even more wide array of recipes than the first Tastes Like Home cookbook the County's Cultural Services created in 2023.
"The student one is actually a much more diverse range of food," he said. "We've got Mozambican shrimp, Brazilian cheese knots, a Lebanese fattoush, German beef rouladen, lots of different recipes representing lots of different countries from around the world."
Nonkes said while a lot of the recipes were family traditions, some were aspirational, with students taking an interest in other cultures and researching more about them.
The end result is a 116-page book that features 48 recipes.
The cookbooks are now available for purchase at Huron County Libraries for $20.
