Watchdog investigating after suspect arrested in Arthur dies in custody

The province's police watchdog has been called in to investigate after a man arrested in North Wellington died in a jail cell.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, the 36-year-old man was arrested by OPP in Arthur around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

He was held in police cells in Teviotdale before being transferred to the South Wellington Operations Centre in Rockwood that same night.

Wednesday morning, the man was observed to be in medical distress. He was transported to Guelph hospital and pronounced dead at 11:20 a.m.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case and the post-mortem is scheduled for Friday.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
