Listowel Memorial's Obstetrics Department to reopen September 16

Pregnant women in the Listowel-area will no longer have to travel outside the community to have their babies delivered.

The Listowel Wingham Hospital Alliance has announced the return of Listowel Memorial Hospital's Obstetrics Department.

"This past spring we made the difficult decision to temporarily close our doors with the promise that we would return," the hospital alliance said in a statement issued late Monday afternoon. "The OB staff and physicians would like to thank the community, patients, and regional partners for their patience and understanding as we worked to reopen our doors."

The alliance added that obstetrics department employees look forward to serving the community once again.

The department was temporarily shut down at the end of April because of a staffing shortage created when six of its eight full-time registered nurses went on maternity leave.

The hospital alliance said the department will reopen to labour and deliveries as of September 16.
