Drivers cruising above the speed limit was the main issue for Huron OPP carrying out a long weekend crackdown on bad driving behaviours.
Between last Friday and Labour Day Monday, officers across the county took part in a long weekend traffic campaign focused on distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding and aggressive driving, and those not wearing a seatbelt. By the end of the four day stretch, 216 charges had been laid and 74 warnings issued, police said.
In total, 149 drivers were charged with speeding, ten had insurance infractions, five were allegedly impaired, three were charged with stunt driving, and a dozen were charged with failing to wear their seatbelt. There were also 36 other provincial offences charges laid and one person was charged with a criminal code traffic offence.
"The Huron OPP would like to thank those that made safety a priority this past weekend and would like to remind everyone that traffic safety is everyone's responsibility," OPP said in a statement.
Police also noted officers worked throughout the weekend to ensure the influx of tourists enjoying the Lake Huron shoreline stayed safe with no incidents reported.
