Northern Bruce Peninsula Council is still debating the future of the Lion’s Head Arena, following a meeting on September 9, 2024, where three options for the project were presented but no final decision was made.
These options include significant renovations to the current arena, a brand new facility, or a combination of renovating the arena while constructing a new library and community centre. The project has been in development since 2020, but rising costs and other challenges have caused delays. Notably, a building assessment determined the arena has approximately 50 years of lifespan left, although minor repairs will be necessary over the next decade.
The first option, which focuses on accessibility improvements and energy efficiency upgrades to the existing arena, would cost the municipality $7 million. This includes new change rooms, improved dressing areas, a modern septic system, and the construction of an outdoor walking track.
The second option involves constructing an entirely new facility, at an estimated cost of $31 million. This plan would require acquiring new land and building a multifunctional arena, library, and community center from scratch.
The third option combines both renovation and new construction, focusing on updating the existing arena while building a new library and community center on an adjacent property. This would cost about $20 million, with the bulk of the budget going toward the new library and community space.
While council postponed making a final decision, more details about land acquisition and funding options will be discussed during future meetings.
