The Municipality of Kincardine will be accepting applications to fill the vacant seat on council following the passing of Doug Kennedy.
Kincardine council says the application period opens at 9 a.m. on Monday, September 23 and will remain open until Friday, October 25th at 3 p.m.
Council recently decided to appoint Kennedy's successor, rather than have a by-election.
Whoever is appointed to the vacant seat will fill the seat until whoever is elected in the 2026 municipal election is sworn in. The appointment is scheduled to occur at a special meeting of council on November 6 at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Municipal Administration Centre in Kincardine.
Those with interest in applying to become the Councillor of Ward 1 must reside in or be the owner or tenant of land in the Municipality of Kincardine, or the spouse of an owner or tenant, be a Canadian citizen, be at least 18-years-old, and not be prohibited from voting.
“The council appointment meeting gives each certified candidate an opportunity to speak before council. Then, during the open meeting, a vote selects from the candidates the new Councillor Ward 1. The successful candidate takes their oath of office and, through by-law, begin acting in their role,” explained Jennifer Lawrie, Manager of Legislative Services and Clerk for the Municipality of Kincardine.
