Major upgrades planned for Durham's Riverside Park

Riverside Park in downtown Durham is set for a major transformation, thanks to support from the My Main Street Community Activator initiative.

The Municipality of West Grey has partnered with local groups, including the Durham Business Improvement Area and Friends of Music in the Park, to redesign and reinvigorate the popular park.

The project will bring several new features, including a pavilion, improved signage, seasonal lighting, and semi-permanent bathrooms. West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles said the upgrades will enhance Riverside Park’s role as a key gathering space.

“Riverside Park plays an essential role in our community," Eccles explained. "This redesign marks a key step forward, and we’re excited to see the positive impact it will have on both residents and visitors.”

The initiative is part of My Main Street, a program supported by the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) and funded by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario. CUI President Mary Rowe said projects like this drive economic and social renewal.

“These investments strengthen communities, attracting visitors, supporting local businesses, and creating vibrant spaces where people can connect and thrive,” added Rowe.
