Stratford man arrested after morning standoff

A 51-year-old Stratford man was arrested after a nearly six-hour long standoff on Thursday morning.

Stratford Police responded to a call for intimate partner violence at a residence on Mornington Street around 5:30 a.m. on December 5.

A female victim was found waiting along the street and was taken to hospital by a witness, who alerted police to the situation. The victim remains in hospital receiving treatment for injuries.

Officers responded to the residence where the man barricaded himself inside. Police said they closed down the surrounding area "to contain the situation and attempt for a peaceful resolution through negotiations with the man," while also noting safety was a concern due to a reported firearm.

The man was arrested around 11 a.m. shortly after he exited the residence. Police said they seized a replica firearm from him during the arrest.

The man is facing numerous charges for "serious criminal offences," a list of which police say will be provided when available. He was held in custody to attend a bail hearing.

Stratford Police expressed thanks to the witness who stopped to offer help to the victim.
