Weekend fire at Erie Meats contained by crews

A weekend fire at a local meat processing and packaging facility was contained by firefighters.

North Perth Fire Chief Janny Pape confirmed that on Sunday, January 19 just before 6 a.m., fire crews were called to the Erie Meats facility in Listowel on Mitchell Road South for a fire.

Mutual aid was received from Perth East and Minto Fire Departments. The crews were met with heavy smoke upon arrival, and the fire was contained to a shipping area. No injuries were reported.

Crews cleared the property just after 1 p.m.

"Industrial partners are reminded that storing combustible materials increases the fuel load within the space should a fire occur. Controlling the combustible storage in these spaces can reduce the risk of a fire developing," Chief Pape pointed out.
