Man charged in Markdale armed robbery

The Grey Bruce OPP have charged an Alliston man following an armed robbery in Grey Highlands last week.

On January 23, around 10:30 p.m., police received a report of a robbery involving a firearm at a financial institution along Toronto Street North in Markdale.

According to OPP, investigation revealed that the victim was using the ATM at the location when they were approached and assaulted by a man, brandishing a handgun, who demanded the victim withdraw funds.

Using surveillance footage, police were able to identify a suspect and a 36-year-old was taken into custody the following day. During the arrest, the involved weapon was seized and confirmed to be an imitation handgun.

As a result of the investigation, the man has been charged with armed robbery, pointing a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
