Text scam nabs thousands from victim

Perth County OPP are investigating after someone was scammed out of thousands of dollars through a text scam.

On February 7, police were informed that a parent in West Grey was defrauded of $3,000 after receiving a text from someone claiming to be their daughter who needed money.

Police launched an investigation, and are warning everyone to be wary of scams through texts, emails, and pop-up ads online.

The OPP says you should always be suspicious of calls or texts that require immediate action, never send money or any other funds to unverified persons and confirm the identity and legitimacy of the story from the family member before completing any transactions.

If you have any information regarding this incident, contact Perth County OPP or Crime Stoppers. If you have been the victim of fraud, report it to your local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
