Tractor operator charged in Owen Sound crash

Owen Sound police have arrested a 43-year-old man involved in a crash Thursday morning.

Police said the collision occurred at around 11:10 a.m. on 18th Avenue East off 16th Street East. A snow removal operator, who was operating a John Deere loader tractor, struck a Honda Civic before fleeing the scene.

A witness trailed the tractor, keeping it in sight despite it running several red lights. Officers caught up with the tractor in the area of 7th Avenue East and 7th Street East.

No one was hurt in the crash.

Police learned that the operator had his licence previously suspended on an impaired driving charge. He had gotten it back with the condition of having an interlock device on any vehicle he operated. The tractor was not equipped with one.

The operator is charged with operating while prohibited, failure to remain at the scene of a collision, and red light violations. The tractor was towed and will be impounded for 45 days.

The charges have not been proven in court. The driver will be able to respond to the counts in an Owen Sound court on February 27.
