Trio charged in Owen Sound butter theft

An off-duty security guard is being credited with helping to thwart a trio of alleged butter thieves in Owen Sound.

According to Owen Sound police, a loss prevention officer at an upper east side grocery store on Sunday spotted three men stealing several containers of ghee, a type of clarified butter originating from India. The men left the store in a vehicle before turning up at a different retailer nearby.

The same loss prevention officer, who was now off-duty, was also at the store and recognized the three men as the same ones who lifted butter from the other grocery store, police said.

The officer called police who arrived and arrested three men in a vehicle. More than $1,000 worth of butter and nearly $300 worth of ghee was recovered by police.

Three men, a 24-year-old and a 21-year-old from Brampton and a 21-year-old from Caledon, are charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. All three are scheduled to appear in Owen Sound court in relation to the charges in March.
