Trevor Jones' appointment as Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness not only marks a milestone for Essex County but also strengthens an existing working relationship within the province’s agricultural leadership.
Jones will serve alongside Lisa Thompson, who has been reappointed as Minister of Rural Affairs. Thompson, the MPP for Huron-Bruce, previously held the agriculture portfolio before a cabinet shuffle in 2023.
The two have worked together on various agricultural initiatives, and farm leaders believe their partnership will be beneficial for rural Ontario.
“Having both Minister Jones and Minister Thompson in these roles is a win for Ontario’s agricultural and rural communities,” said Jeff Harrison, chair of Grain Farmers of Ontario. “We’ve worked with both of them before, and they understand the unique challenges our industry faces.”
During his time as parliamentary assistant to the agriculture minister, Jones collaborated with Thompson on risk management policies and funding for farm operations. Now, as minister, he’s stepping into a key leadership position at a time when trade tensions are escalating.
Thompson has been a strong proponent of infrastructure development and policies that support Ontario’s farmers. With Jones now leading the agriculture file, it's expected stakeholders see a continuity of leadership that could lead to stronger collaboration between rural and urban policymakers.
The two ministers also share a focus on protecting Ontario’s agricultural land from urban sprawl and ensuring that government policies support long-term farm sustainability.
Farm organizations, including the Beef Farmers of Ontario and the Grain Farmers of Ontario, have already signaled their intent to work closely with Jones and Thompson to tackle pressing issues such as conservation authority regulations, trade barriers, and access to farm support programs.
