Man tasered, charged after 'violent' struggle with Hanover police

A Hanover police officer suffered minor injuries in what police called a violent struggle with an impaired driving suspect early Friday morning.

Witnesses provided police with "valuable and timely" information about the whereabouts of a man they were pursuing for driving while under the influence. Officers found the man hiding under the deck of a home on 12th Street near 13th Avenue.

A struggle ensued and the man was tasered by police.

He suffered minor injuries, but did not require medical treatment, police said. An officer was also hurt during the arrest.

A 37-year-old Fergus man is charged with obstructing police, mischief under $5,000, resisting arrest, assault with intent to resist arrest, impaired driving with over 80 mg of alcohol in 100 mL of blood, trespassing, and open liquor in a vehicle.

He is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing later in the day on Friday.
