The Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) is partnering with Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) to address growing concerns about youth vaping and the impact of technology and social media on students.
Surveys in 2023 revealed that vaping rates among Huron Perth youth are higher than the provincial average, while less than one per cent of local youth are meeting recommended daily screen time limits. In response, AMDSB has announced a series of initiatives to raise awareness and provide resources for students, parents, and school staff.
To shine a light on the issue of technology use and its effect on youth, the board will host a free, in-person film screening of “Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age” (2025 update). The film examines the latest research and expert advice on managing screen time and social media use among young people.
The screenings will take place on Tuesday, May 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at four secondary schools across the district:
Central Huron SS in Clinton
Listowel District SS in Listowel
Mitchell District SS in Mitchell
Stratford District SS in Stratford
Snacks will be provided, and childcare will be available for families with younger children (advance registration required). The film will be shown simultaneously at each location and is not available for online viewing.
In addition, AMDSB is launching a new anti-vaping campaign to raise awareness of the health risks, provide conversation tips for parents, and offer resources for youth seeking to quit.
“We know that overuse of technology and vaping are major issues for students,” said Superintendent of Education Jane Morris. “Our hope is that by equipping students themselves, as well as staff and families, with accurate information about the risks and what to do about them, we will provide the support that will make a difference.”
