Handgun, drugs seized at sobriety checkpoint

Two people are facing charges after a handgun and illegal drugs were found inside a vehicle stopped at a sobriety checkpoint in the Municipality of Grey Highlands.

Grey Bruce OPP officers had just started conducting the RIDE program shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Monday when an issue arose with the first vehicle stopped. According to police, officers had reason to further investigate with a search turning up an undisclosed quantity of drugs, a handgun, and cash.

Police did not released an estimated street value of the drugs seized.

A 25-year-old and a 31-year-old, both from Toronto, are charged with three counts of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and one count each of possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, occupying a vehicle knowing there was a firearm, and unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm.

The 25-year-old is additionally charged with carrying a concealed prohibited device, and driving a vehicle with cannabis readily available.

Both of the accused are scheduled to appear in Owen Sound court for a bail hearing on Monday.
