Council for the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula has directed staff to proceed with the demolition of a former daycare to make space for a new parking lot.
The building at 3 Centennial Drive, which used to host the Tobermory’s daycare before it moved to a new location up the street, will be torn down this summer and prepared for future use to help alleviate parking pressures in high-demand areas.
Staff provided a report to council this week suggesting a three-phase approach to construction. The first would be to tear the building down this summer.
The second, pending budget approval for 2026, would be to install a gravel parking lot to boost parking capacity, constructing accessible washroom facilities to improve the visitor experience, and launching a shuttle service.
The final phase will be guided by the revenue generated from the new parking lot, and will involve exploring building a permanent facility on the site, but not until 2028 or beyond.
By approving this plan, council also agreed to put the alternative parking site project along Big Tub Road on hold and a reassessment of its feasibility be included in council’s next strategic plan review.
