One woman dies in Stratford house fire

Stratford emergency services responded to a house fire that proved fatal over the Victoria Day weekend.

According to Stratford Fire Department, trucks responded to a fire at a residence in the 500-block of Downie Street at 11 p.m. Sunday night.

"It was contained to the second floor bedroom," said Stratford Fire Chief Neal Anderson. "There was a victim removed unconscious, and pronounced (dead) at the hospital."

The victim was a woman, but no other details have been released, as the incident is under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Anderson said the fire department and police had to stay on scene all night in order to protect evidence, but the actual blaze was knocked down quickly.

He said the damage was limited and there were no other occupants in the house.
