The Special Investigations Unit has terminated an investigation into the injury of a Owen Sound man that happened in the presence of police.
According to Joseph Martino, director of the Ontario police watchdog, the 23-year-old's fractured wrist was entirely a result of his own actions, leaving nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer.
The SIU's mandate was invoked on February 26, after Owen Sound police notified it that a man they arrested a week prior was diagnosed with a serious injury.
Preliminary inquiries found that on February 21, the 23-year-old was arrested at a residence, after his roommate called police expressing concerns about his mental well-being.
"The SIU police took the man to hospital, where he was placed in a patient room in the emergency department. While waiting to be seen by medical staff, the man punched the wall with his right fist. The man was not co-operative with medical staff, and police and hospital security were required to physically restrain him," said the SIU statement.
It was concluded there was no force was used by police during the restraint process that could have caused the injury, and that investigation should be dropped.
