The Township of Southgate is committing hundreds of thousands of dollars to a new pool in Mount Forest.
According to a media release from the Township of Wellington North and the Mount Forest Aquatics Ad-Hoc Advisory Committee, Southgate has pledged $250,000 to the construction of the new pool.
Southgate Council approved a motion to give $50,000 over 5 years at the council meeting on May 28. The money will be held in a reserve account until construction of the new pool begins.
Mount Forest's new pool will be located on Princess Street directly across from the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. The project currently has a price tag of $5.3 million. There is a public fundraising goal of $2.5 million.
After 80 per cent of the fundraising is collected, next steps in the construction process will get underway, according to the media release from Wellington North.
Just over $1 million has now been pledged or donated to the project so far.
"The Township of Wellington North is deeply grateful for the Township of Southgate’s generous $250,000 pledge toward the new Mount Forest Outdoor Pool," said Councillor Sherry Burke, chair of the Mount Forest Aquatics Ad-Hoc Advisory Committee. "This contribution is a testament to the long-standing spirit of collaboration between our two communities. We are proud of the shared vision and commitment that continues to strengthen our partnership, and we look forward to the positive impact this new facility will have on residents of all ages."
"The Township of Southgate and the Township of Wellington North have been great neighbours for many years and have partnered on a number of projects that benefit our residents. When the opportunity to contribute to the pool project arose Southgate Council was quick to agree that this was something we wanted to be a part of," said Southgate Mayor Brian Milne. "Good luck Wellington North on this exciting project and we look forward to you making a splash in the near future!"
