Suspected impaired man accused of assaulting police, damaging cruiser

What police have called a "violent outburst" during an arrest in the Municipality of West Grey has led to a lengthy list of charges against a man.

West Grey police arrested a man for public intoxication last Friday and seized ammunition, brass knuckles, and a spring-assisted knife.

While being driven to Hanover hospital for assessment, the man is alleged to have become rowdy, kicking out the cruiser's partition window, assaulting an officer, and trying to grab a patrol rifle from its mount. According to police, the man had slipped his handcuffs from behind his back to the front, prior to the violent incident.

Officers were able to remove the man from the vehicle, however, he allegedly continued to resist, biting officers multiple times. Police placed the man in hand and leg shackles and a protective helmet to prevent further self-harm or injury to officers. He was then taken to hospital, where he remains under police custody and medical assessment.

Prior to the latest arrest, the man was bound by a probation order with conditions to keep the peace and not possess weapons, police said. The man is also subject to a lifetime prohibition order as a result of prior convictions for possession of dangerous weapons including a loaded firearm.

The man, whose name and age were not released, is charged with nine additional offences, police said.
