Swimmer drowns in Georgian Bay near Meaford

A 55-year-old from Ottawa has become the fourth person to drown in midwestern Ontario this month.

Emergency crews were called to a waterfront property on Cedar Avenue in the Municipality of Meaford just after 1 p.m. on Wednesday after a swimmer was found unresponsive in Georgian Bay.

Bystanders were able to bring the person back to shore and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

"Despite resuscitation efforts, the 55-year-old from Ottawa was pronounced deceased at the scene," Grey Bruce OPP said in a statement.

Police offered their thanks to members of the public who assisted the swimmer.

It has been a deadly month in the water across the region with a 13-year-old Hamilton girl drowning in the water at Wildwood Conservation Area on July 20.

A 32-year-old man died in Lake Huron near Howdenvale when his canoe overturned on July 14 and a four-year-old drowned while swimming in a pond with family near Proton Station on July 13.
