New council elected for Chippewas of Nawash elected

Members of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation have elected a new council.

Results were confirmed by the electoral official Friday night, after polls closed at 8 p.m.

Darlene Johnston was acclaimed as Chief on June 27 as the sole nominee, after candidate Steven Lavalley withdrew his nomination.

For councillors, there will be four new members this term: Darren Johnston, Rozella Johnston, Janine Manning and former Chief Greg Nadjiwon.

Other returning members include: Anthony Chegahno, Norma Tobey, Nick Saunders, Jessica Keeshig-Martin, and Paul Jones.

Keeshig-Martin received the most votes for council, one shy of 300.

The next term of council begins on August 7.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
